On 23 January 2026, the Management Board of Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong Nature Reserve, in collaboration with Viet Nature Conservation Centre (Viet Nature), officially launched the Biodiversity Report of the reserve. This milestone highlights the outstanding conservation value of Dong Chau – Khe Nuoc Trong and provides a strong scientific foundation for future management, conservation efforts, and long-term partnerships.

Located along the Truong Son Range, in the southern part of Quang Binh Province (now part of Quang Tri Province), the reserve covers more than 22,132 hectares, of which at least 97% is native natural forest. It is one of the most intact remaining lowland forests in the region, playing a vital role in biodiversity conservation, watershed protection, erosion control, and carbon storage. The report documents a remarkable 1,030 plant species, including 571 medicinal plants and 220 bird species, as well as numerous rare and threatened mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. Notable species include the Crested Argus, Red-shanked Douc, Siki Gibbon, and Annamite Striped Rabbit.
In addition to compiling years of field surveys and biodiversity monitoring, the report provides a valuable scientific database to help identify conservation priorities, strengthen monitoring systems, and inform policy development. It also highlights the strong linkages between forest conservation, community livelihoods, ecosystem services, and climate change mitigation and adaptation.
For Viet Nature, the publication of this report reflects more than a decade of sustained collaboration. Working closely with the Nature Reserve Management Board and partners, Viet Nature has supported biodiversity surveys and monitoring, camera trapping, forest carbon research, capacity building for forest protection forces, improvements to forest patrol stations, and the promotion of community engagement.
The cooperation agreement for the 2025–2030 period, with a vision to 2050, further reinforces Viet Nature’s long-term commitment to working with stakeholders to safeguard the integrity of this critical forest landscape.
